The best yoga poses for bedtime

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Many consider yoga to be energising, but it can be perfect for helping you wind down and relieve the stresses of the day. A calming bedtime yoga routine can help to relax your body as well as your mind and help you drift off into a sleep that will leave you refreshed for the day ahead.

One of the key elements of getting a good night's sleep is establishing a night-time routine. By adopting yoga into your nocturnal habits you can help get your body and mind into a state that promotes deep sleep. Calming poses that offer a gentle stretch to relieve tension combined with mindful breathing send signals to the body that it is time to rest, helping you drift off to sleep.

Which yoga poses are best for bedtime?

For a successful night time yoga routine, you should focus on gentle poses and meditative breathing exercises . Try starting on a yoga mat beside the bed or in a calming space, and relax into bed to finish with mindful breathing to send you into slumber.

Hip and chest-opening yoga poses are great gentle and restorative positions to consider incorporating into your bedtime routine. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Pigeon pose

  • Sphinx pose

  • Cat/cow pose

  • Hero pose

  • Happy baby pose

  • Corpse pose.

Corpse pose is the perfect pose to finish to focus on meditative and diaphragmatic breathing and prepare the body and mind for sleep. An eye cushion can be of great benefit during meditative breathing to stimulate the vagus nerve, sending messages to relax throughout the body.
